pH is defined as the negative log of concentration of H+ ions.

pH = - Log[H+]

Animesh1912: exactly dude. what is an acid? the species which donate H+ isn't it? so amount of H+ released would tell us how acidic a substance is and amount of OH- produced would tell us how basic a substance is.
