Conversion of acetaldehyde into acetoneinvolves two steps as follows. Step-1:—Conversion of acetaldehyde to isopropyl alcohol. Acetaldehyde is treated with methyl magnessium bromide in presence of dry ether to form Mg complex which on acid hydrolysis,isopropyl alcohol is obtained.

Step-2:—Oxidation of isopropyl alcohol.

Isopropyl alcohol is oxidised by acidified potassium dichromate to form acetone.
