Propane can be converted into ethanoic acid as follows.

Step-1:-Chlorination of propane:— Propane is treated with chlorine in presence of sunlight to form 2-chloropropane as a major product. propane —-hν—-> 2-chloropropane

Step-2:—Alkaline hydrolysis of 2 - choropropane:—- ————- 2chloropropane is boiled with aqueous KOH to form prapan-2-ol 2-chloropropane——->propan-2ol

Step-3:———Oxidation of propan-2-ol Propan-2-ol is oxidised by acidified potassium dichromate to form acetone,which is further oxidised by same oxidising agent to give acetic acid.
