Rakesh Sharma, is a former Indian Air Force pilot, who was acclaimed as a hero of the Soviet Union by being conferred with the honour of Hero of the Soviet Union. He flew aboard Soyuz T-11, a spacecraft, which was launched on 2nd April, 1984, as a a part of the Intercosmos programme. Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to take part in a Space Mission and travel into outer space. India conferred on him the prestigious Ashoka Chakra, which is its highest peacetime gallantry award.
