Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh (3 November 1688 – 21 September 1743) was the Hindu Rajput ruler of the kingdom of Amber (later called Jaipur). He was born at Amber, the capital of the Kachwahas. He became ruler of Amber at the age of 11 after his father Maharaja Bishan Singh died on 31 December 1699
His major achievements are the following:
1. Astronomical observatories: he built five Astronomical observatories at Mathura, Delhi, Benares, Jaipur, and Ujjain. These towers were used to precisely prognosticate eclipses and other celestial events.
2. Jaipur city: his greatest achievement was the construction of a city called Jaipur.
3. Translation work: Raja Jai Singh translated the work of great Astronomers, for instance, he translated the work of John Napier.

(i) Sawai Raja Jai Singh: The most enlightened. Rajput ruler of this period was Sawai Raja Jai Singh of Amber. He encouraged the teaching and learning of science. Sawai Raja Jai Singh founded the city of Jaipur and made it his capital. He was ako interested in astronomy and built many observatories.
(ii) Sikh misls: In the second half of the 18th century the Sikhs formed 12 political groups called misls. Each misl controlled a specific area and had a leader. Towards the end of the 18th century, Maharaja Ranjit singh, the leader of the Sukerchika misl united all the misls. He established a power kingdom in Punjab.
(iii) The Ashtapradhan: Shivaji had a council of eight ministers, called the ashtapradhan to advise him. The words comes from Sanskrit and means important eight. These were:

Peshwa (head of coundil and general administration)
Senapati (commander-in-chif of the army)
Nyayadhish (justice)
Amatya or Majumdar (finance)
