In the presence of water, acid gives $\sf {H}^{+}$ ion or $\sf {H_3{O}^{+}$ ion.

The strength of acids depends on the number of ions $\sf( {H}^{+} \: or {OH}^{-})$.

If the large number of $\sf{H}^{+}$ is produced by an acid, it means acid is strong.

If pH < 7, solution is acidic.
