When the gas is bubbled into an acidified solution of dichromate, the colour of the solution changes from orange to green due to the reduction of the Cr2O7(2-) ions to Cr(3+) ions.
K2Cr2O7 + 3H2S + 4H2SO4 = K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + 3S + 7H2O
H2S gets oxidised to sulphur.
