Answer:

Salt and water do give back acid and base, the reaction is known as salt hydrolysis. Salt hydrolysis does not occur if the salt is formed by a strong acid and a strong base. All other salts undergo hydrolysis . The equilibrium constant , called hydrolysis constant , Kh = Kw/Ka or Kw/Kb if the acid or the base, respectively, is weak. Ka and Kb are the dissociation constants of the weak acid and the weak base respectively and Kw is the ionic product of water. If both the acid and base are weak, Kh=Kw/(Ka*Kb). The hydrolysis constants of a few salts are given below.

Sodium acetate, CH3COONa, Kh= 5.5*10^-10

Ammonium Chloride, NH4Cl, Kh= 5.5*10^-10

Ammonium cyanide, NH4CN, Kh=1.25
