acids do not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water but do so in water. justify this statement with the help of a chemical equation​

According to bronsted theory...

~an acid is that compound which release H+ ions.

~and a base is that compound which releases OH- ions

...so the acid releases the H+ ions in water and water also have H+ ions .....so in water H+ ions conc. increases than OH- ions....so solution will be act as acid ...so we called it as acid

HA + H2O -------> H+ + A-

pH = -log [ H+]

as [H+] conc. increases smaller the pH value...which shows it is an acid.
