In chemistry, acids and bases have been defined differently by three sets of theories. One is the Arrhenius definition, which revolves around the idea that acids are substances that ionize (break off) in an aqueous solution to produce hydrogen (H+) ions while bases produce hydroxide (OH-) ions in solution.F

On a pH scale , a solution which has more concentration of H+ ions that is from range of 0-7 is considered an acid.
On a pH scale, a solution which has lessser concentration of H+ions and more of OH- ions is considered to be a base.
Properties of acids :
1.The acids react with metals to give out hydrogen gas.
2Na + 2HCl -> 2NaCl + H2 (hydrogen gas)
2. Acids react with bases to form salt and water.
3. Acids react with carbonic compounds to form their salts CO2 gas and H2O.
Properties of bases :
1. Metals react with bases to form salts and hydrogen gas is evolved.
Zn + 2NaOH -> Na2ZnO2 + H2
2. Bases react with acids to form salt and water.
3. Bases react with non metal oxides to form salt and water.
