Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry.
Causes and effects:
- Floods are frequently brought on by prolonged periods of heavy rain, quick snowmelt, or storm surges from tropical cyclones or tsunamis in coastal locations.
- Floods can wreak havoc across a large area, killing people, damaging private property, and destroying vital public health facilities.
- The most vulnerable people to floods are those who reside on floodplains, in non-floodproof structures, or who lack warning systems and awareness of the risk of flooding.
Types of floods:
There are three typical flood types:
- Rapid and heavy rain that raises water levels quickly and can overwhelm rivers, streams, channels, or roadways is what causes flash floods.
- When a river is overloaded due to continuous rain or snowmelt, river floods result.
- Storm surges brought on by tropical storms and tsunamis are what create coastal flooding.
