Alm: To prepare a rayon thread from the filter
paper
Materials Required: Conical flask, glass rod,
scissors, syringe, beaker, filter paper, copper
sulphate, sodium hydroxide, 50% ammonia
solution, dilute sulphuric acid
Procedure
1. Take 10 g copper sulphate in a 250 mL conical
flask and add water to make a saturated
solution
2. Add aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide
drop by drop till a blue precipitate is formed,
3. Filter and dissolve the precipitate in 50%
ammonia solution to get deep blue solution.
4. Cutig whatmann filter paper into small
pieces and drop them inside the blue
solution
5. Keep the apparatus undisturbed for a few
hours to get a viscous solution.
6. Squeeze the viscous solution through the
nozzle of a syringe into a beaker containing
dilute sulphuric acid to form long filaments of
rayon
7. Leave the filaments of rayon undisturbed
for 24 hours so that their colour changes to
white.
8. Remove the fibres from the beaker and dry
them over a filter paper.
