Across India September 2020 will be celebrated as the Nutrition Month" announced our
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in his monthly broadcast of 67th edition of "Mann Ki
Baat". The PM stressed upon the importance of Nutrition, saying that it had played a key role
in building a Nation. In this revolution for nutrition, participation of people is very important.
He also mentioned additional Health Report Cards for students stating their health along with
the usual Academic Report Cards. He emphasized the importance of including millets such
as jowar, bajra and ragi as part of regular diet to eradicate malnutrition from our country.Millets are indigenous to many parts of the world. Millets are small seeded grasses, widely
grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food. Millets are
non- acid forming foods which makes it easy to digest when eaten in the right quantity.
Each millets comes with its own nutritive value. Millets are rich in calcium and magnesium.
They are also rich in anti-oxidants. In fact Ragi is known to have the highest calcium content
among all the food grains. Millet use is diverse, including in cereals (porridge) soups, bread
and stuffing, fermented beverages and baby food.
The message conveyed is that we must take care of our health and include millets in our diet
to do so.
