when the ph level become less then 7 then it means that it is base . bases are those which carry OH-- ions . where as acids carry H++ ions.

if any indicator is add to a base. it's colour will change such as if u add methyl orange to base it's colour will change into yellow.
In phenolphthalein it change it's colour to red.
