This proverb means that our actions convey more than the words they speak. Here the word speak does not mean literally to speak. It is used to mean convey or show or demonstrate. For example if you are teaching someone how to dance... it is better to show them the movements physically instead off just describing it in words. Actions give a clear picture about what we are trying to say in a short period of time. Here is a small story to illustrate the proverb :

Sita was a ten year old girl who went to school by bicycle everyday. She was a kindhearted young girl always willing to help people. She was very good at studies and always followed her teacher’s advice that one must always lend a helping hand to those in trouble. One morning, as she was on her way to school, she saw a blind man trying to cross the road in the midst of busy traffic. There was no one to help him and he was in danger of getting hurt by the speeding vehicles. Sita, who saw this, parked her cycle in front of a shop and requested the shop owner to look after her cycle, telling him that she was going to help the blind man. Sita ran across to the blind man, took hold of his white cane and told him to walk with her. She waved her hand at all the vehicles, signaling them to stop. All the vehicles stopped and gave way for them to get across. The drivers were touched by the helping move of a small girl who did this small help. The blind man thanked Sita profusely and wished her good luck. Sita’s class teacher who was passing by saw this and felt very proud of her student. Sita’s gesture towards the blind man clearly showed her good intention to help others who were in need. That day the teacher told the whole class of Sita’s helping tendency and asked them to applaud her. She also told the other students that they should follow Sita in converting what they learn into action. Sita was very pleased that she could at least do this small help for a handicapped person. After that Sita became famous among the school-students and she was awarded in the school function for her humanitarian gesture.

There are two types of people in the world – ones those who speak; and others who act. Raj belonged to the latter class. Raj was consumed with the passion to be a champion footballer; but his poor parents could not get him admitted in any football academy. The beauty of life lies in the fact that all great men and women were seldom from affluent families. The story of success begins with challenges. So did Raj’s story begin with obstacles and challenges. In spite of being poor, Raj was a determined and strong guy. There was a power in him that always egged him on to do his best. He would stand on his roof-top and see the players practice maneuvers in the ground. Once a football came flying into his house from the academy; and fortunately no one came to claim it. Raj kept the football and in his small lawn, he would practice all the skills and moves he had seen the players in the academy practice. This went on for many months. As a result of Raj’s passion, he learnt to control football with miraculous skills. People would often wonder at his dribbling, kicking, and other skills. Once he was dribbling with his football on the roof-top. He did not let the ball fall for many minutes. The coach in the academy was watching all the while. He got impressed with Raj’s skills. He called him and asked him to come to the academy ground. He said to him, ‘Will you play the practice match tomorrow?’ ‘Of course’ , replied Raj, ‘I would love to.’ Raj scored a hattrick in the practice match leading to the win of his side. The coach got further impressed with him. He decided to include him in the team that was to play a crucial match against the most famous team of the city. Raj also scored a hattrick in that match. The sponsors were attracted towards him; they hired him. Raj became a huge sensation. He became the number one player of his country. His actions spoke louder than the obstacles. Thus from scratch he inked his own success story.

Answer:

Actions speak louder than words

The proverb "Actions speak louder than words" emphasises that what people actually do is more important than what they say. Our deeds are more significant and more effective than words. People can say sweet and pleasant words but this does not show their real feelings and attitudes. Words are unreliable at best. Promises can be easily broken and hence what people say may turn out to be of no value.

For example, a poor hungry man goes to a rich man. He tells the rich man that he is hungry and has not eaten for three days. The rich man tells the hungry man to go away somewhere else and find something to eat. The rich man did not help the poor man in any manner. He did not give the hungry man anything to eat. He also sent him away without telling him where to find food. Actions and not words reveal the true intentions of the human heart. The actions of people show their real attitudes. Actions of people are more significant than what they say.

The expression "Actions speak louder than words" teaches us that it is better to do positive things rather than talking about them. It is meaningless when people say nice things and make promises which they have no intention of keeping. It is only by our actual good works that can change the life of a person in a positive way and make this world a better place.
