Answer:
Active voice - He is writing a story
Passive voice - A story is being written by him.
Explanation:
Voice:
- The action or information in a sentence can be expressed in two ways.
- So sentences in English can be in the active or passive voice.
- In a sentence in the active voice, the subject performs the action and object receives it.
- In a sentence in the passive voice, the subject allows the action to be performed on it.
- The subject in the active voice moves to the object position in the passive voice and is called the agent.
We usually use the passive voice
- for emphasis.
- Eg: A tree in our Garden was uprooted by the storm.
Here, the stress is on the fact that the tree in the garden was uprooted, rather than on the storm.
- When the identity of the subject is not clear or not known .
- Eg: The glass windowpane was broken. (by someone unknown)
- Some sentences in the active voice have two objects.
- The direct object answers the question whom or what.
- the indirect object answer the questions of whom, to whom or for whom.
- Eg: Leander drew a map for Mahesh.
Here a map answers the question what and is the or direct object.
Mahesh answers the question for whom and is the indirect object.
Things to remember:
- While changing a sentence into the active voice, if the doer has not been mentioned, then her/his identity must be assumed.
- If the listener knows that you are the doer of an action, there is no need to add by me in every passive sentence. Use the name of the action-doer only when it is not obvious.
- Certain words such as have, Be, arrive, appear, go, fall, happen and weight do not take an object. Passives are not possible in these.
