Activity 2.3 Blocks in Motion
Materials: casserole (any container for heating), stove (any heat source), water, small pieces of wood
Procedure:
1.Pour in water in the casserole (about 1/4 the volume the container).
2.Let it boil using the stove or any source of heat
3.When the water starts to boil, slowly add the pieces of wood in the water. Ovserve.
Questions:
1. what happened to the pieces of wood as you place them in boiling?
2. If the pieces of wood represent the lithodpheric plates, what does the boiling water represent
3.What makes the plates move?

We have been given an experiment and we are asked to give the observation regarding the same.
- The pieces of wood as you place them in boiling will sink. This is because, On heating or boiling of water, the density of water will decrease, so upthrust on wood will also decrease. Thus the weight of the wood will exceed the upthrust and because of the wood, it will sink.
- If the pieces of wood represent the lithospheric plates, then the boiling water represents the asthenosphere. The asthenosphere is a portion of the upper mantle which lies just below the lithospheric plates that are pertained to in plate tectonic movement and isostatic adjustments.
- Heat and gravity make the plates move. The energy source for plate tectonics is internal heat while the forces that move the plates are the ridge push and slab pull gravity forces.
