Aim: To show that sound requires a medium for its propagation
Materials required: Glass bottle, rubber cork with two holes, vacuum pump, small buzzer,
quick fix solution and battery

Procedure:
Rubber cork
1. Connect the two wires to the terminals of the buzzer
and pass the other end of the wires through one of

the holes of the rubber cork. Close the
hole by applying some quick fix solution.
2. Push the cork into the neck of the bottle so that the buzzer is inside the bottle.
Battery
3. Connect the inlet of the vacuum pump to the other hole of the rubber cork. Connect the
buzzer to the terminals of the battery. Can you hear the sound produced by the buzzer?
4. Switch on the vacuum pump. Observe what happens to the sound now.
Observation: Sound produced by the buzzer is heard when there is air inside the bottle. When
the air is removed using a vacuum pump, the sound produced by the buzzer is not heard.
Conclusion: Sound requires a medium for its propagation​
