Hay culture medium is easy to make, promotes heterotrophic succession and is safe for most organisms. The hay infusion is the most well known culturing technique. By boiling one liter of pond, spring or rainwater and as the water comes to a boil, adding a small handful of hay and then again boiling for ten additional minutes will break down the hay and set up an ideal medium for the growth of bacteria. In a few days, small protozoans such as Chilomonas will populate the culture. If Paramecium are present, they will feed on the Chilomonas and eventually increase in number (in 10 to 14 days). The organism at the top of the food chain will become the most common but will quickly die off as the food supply is exhausted. Thus increase in biomass will not occur. Spores are resistant to boiling temperatures that kill vegetative cells. After the hay infusion was boiled and then cooled and kept in the dark for a long time, the spores germinated and began growing as vegetative cells. One organism can be maintained for long periods of time only by subculturing into a newly prepared media. Then only the energy flow can be maintained .
