Answer:

The statement 'man is what he eats' was coined by Ludwig Feuerbach (1804-1872), thus emphasizing the worldliness of human nature as a challenge to the general concentration on the life after and the religious belief of his time. Both views surely reflect only one side of the truth, since the intake of food not only grants man his material survival, but offers him also values of culture, friendship, and of partaking in the divine, for which he strives in his innermost heart.

During the mid twentieth century, the Greek Philosopher, Ludwig Feuerbach, stated that "man is what he eats". It is true that man eats his own interpretation because whatever one eats is transformed into their own flesh and blood. But if we look into the deeper meaning of the saying, we would find that Feuerbach was a thoroughgoing materialist who thought that we are just flesh and blood and bones and nothing else. So, there are two aspects to the saying – Physical and Spiritual.

Physically, it implies that if a person wants to be healthy and happy, he/she must eat a balanced diet. Nutrition plays an important role in our physical being. We require vitamins and minerals for healthy skin, teeth, etc. And not getting them in adequate amounts may result in deficiencies and diseases. Carbohydrates and fats are required to provide energy to our bodies without which we would not be able perform our daily activities. Proteins are also an important part of our diets since they help in the building and repair of cells and tissues of our bodies. Therefore, for us to be physically healthy, we need to eat a well balanced diet consisting of all the nutrients.

Spiritually, the saying shows that Feuerbach believed that religion of any kind is meaningless. He didn't think that there was anything beyond the material world: no God and no soul. But here's what he missed: the food that we eat is God's gift and blessing. We are what we eat alright, but our eating binds us to our creator through his gifts. Food is the seal of God's love for his people and we are his blessed people.
