Activity : Do plants breathe?
Materials required: Live leaf (Fresh one, do not pick it up off the ground), transparent glass
or plastic bowl, water, small rock, magnifying glass (optional)
Procedure 1) Fill the bowl with water at room temperature.
2) Now place the leaf in the bowl of water.
3) Then place a small rock on top of the leaf to fully submerge the leaf under the water.
4) Place the bowl in a sunny spot inside or outside.
5) Wait for a few hours, then observe.
Now answer the following questions:
Q1. a) What do you see on the leaf?
b) Why do you think are the bubbles formed over the leaf?

Explanation:

When the leaf is submerged it is using light to continue the process of photosynthesis. Part of this process is to let oxygen out of the leaves. It is this oxygen that you are seeing as bubbles in the water. So while a plant does not breathe like we do (using lungs) it does take in and release air.
