Answer:
I would do what Sayajirao Gaekwad III did for his state- Baroda or Vadodara.
Sayajirao in 1875 took the responsibility of Baroda state as a ruler. He was a very visionary ruler. After he took the throne of Baroda, he realized the might of British rule and how to use it in the favor of his subjects. Sayajirao III ruled the Baroda state from 1875 to 1939 and did lot of works to modernize Baroda state.
However, by this time, British East India Company was gone and the rein was in the hands of Queen Victoria.
Education:
Sayajirao knew the importance of English education and pioneered in establishing compulsory primary education, schools, colleges & universities. His Central Library of Baroda was well connected with a network of libraries in all the towns and villages in his state. He was the first ruler to introduce compulsory and free primary education in his state.
Water Supply Infrastructure:
During the regime of Sayajirao, dams like Ajwa were built to meet the drinking water & irrigation requirements. Till date, Ajwa dam is used to supply drinking water in Vadodara.
Rail Infrastructure:
Sayajirao built a great network of railways in and around Baroda.
Banking:
Founding of Bank of Baroda in 1908 which was an economical development initiative.
Britishers wanted to exploit India for making their empire more strong. They imposed heavy taxes on states and rulers had to follow them. But, many kings like Sayajirao used Britishers very wisely for their benefits. There were many other kings who could not stop ill-practices of British empire in their states.
However, for Sayajirao it was not all “bed of roses” but he very cleverly used Britishers for uplifting the lives of his subjects.
