Because water moved into the raisin, we know that the raisins' skins are semi-permeable membranes. During osmosis, water moves to an area of lesser water concentration. The raisins did not have very much water inside, so the water from the glass moved through the skin and filled the raisins.

When raisins are placed in water (a hypotonic solution), they absorb water by a process called osmosis and swell up. ... If these swollen raisins are now kept in a concentrated salt or sugar solution (a hypertonic solution), water from the turgid raisins will come out of the cells and they will shrink.
