Activity - Study of Uniform Circular Motion
To describe the direction of the velocity and acceleration that moves in a circle at a constant speed.
What do we require?
Stone, Thread
What do we need to know?
To make a body move in circular path centripetal force is required
to change the direction of its velocity at every point along the path.
How will you proceed?
Take a piece of thread and tie a small piece of stone at one of its
ends. Move the stone to describe a circular path with constant speed by holding the thread at the other end. Now let the stone go by releasing the thread. Repeat the activity for a few times by changing the length of the thread and calculate velocity and acceleration associated on changing the length of the wire.
What have you observed?
S.No Length of Thread Radius Velocity Acceleration
What have you learnt?
1) Can you tell the direction in which the stone is released?
2) What is the effect of the length of wire on the velocity of
the stone?
Test your learning:
1) Why do you feel a sensation of being thrown outward from the center in a roller coaster during circular motion, although there is no outward net force.
2) How can tracks and race car tires be engineered to help drivers make faster turns?
3) Give the names of toys played in childhood which used the
