Answer:

The aim:  to determine  solubility of various substances (solids  and  liquids ) in   water.

Water is a universal solvent ,however it is polar and  therefore cannot dissolve non-polar  liquids like mineral oil.

The  materials required are:

Water

measuring  cylinder

Straw

masking tape and  a pen for  labelling

ink paper

The procedure

1. label  clearly all the three glasses as  A, B ,C

2. Use  a measuring  cylinder to pour equal amounts  of  water into  the three  glasses

3.While keenly looking at glass labelled A ,add 2-3  drops of ink into  it and  observe color change

4.Do not stir instead watch to  see if the ink  color disappears.Proceed to record your observations before moving to glass B.

5.Repeat the procedure above for the remaining glasses B and  C

Observation

Sugar is  stirred up to  dissolve in  water

Ink is a composition of  dyes of  different colours. When an ink paper is dropped in certain solvents the colours can be separated by the fact  that the ink will spread out  on  the paper.

Some inks are  found out  to  be water soluble

Precautions

1. Avoid using plastic containers because some liquids react with plastic

2.Read all the precautionary measures on  the label

3.Ensure the liquids are subjected to same temperature for a better result

4.Exercise lab safety ,some liquids are  flammable
