As the elodea produces oxygen inphotosynthesis, some of the oxygendissolves in the water and displaces nitrogen gas and carbon dioxide gas. ... The oxygen bubbles formed during photosynthesis displace water from the test tube, so the water level should appear lower than it was originally

Describe an experiment to to show that oxygen is released during photosynthesis by green plants

Aim:

To show that oxygen is released during photosynthesis by green plants

Apparatus:

Two beakers (1 litre), water-plant - ceratophyllum, glowing splint, water , two funnels, and two test tubes.

Method:

1. Place that water-plant (ceratophyllum) inside a beaker containing the fresh water.

2. Cover it with an inverted funnel.

3. Label A

4. Place another water plant in another beaker of fresh water,

5. Cover with an inverted funnel.

6. Label B.

7. Place the set-up A ,under sunlight.

8. Do not expose the set-up B, under sunlight. Rather , cover B with a cardboard paper. ( this is the control experiment).

Experiment: To Demonstrate That Oxygen Is Released During Photosynthesis

Experiment: To Demonstrate That Oxygen Is Released During Photosynthesis

Observation:

Bubble of gas was noticed in experiment A. On passing a glowing splint over it, the splint was rekindle. In the set-up B, no bubbles were seen, and it could not rekindle a glowing splint.

Conclusion:

The gas that evolved in A is oxygen because, it is a known test for oxygen that oxygen rekindles a glowing splint.
