Aim :
To show the loss in weight of a leafy shoot in a test tube as a result of transpiration.
Materials Required :
A leafy shoot without roots, oil, test tube, test tube stand, weighing machine, beaker.
Procedure :
- Fill a test tube with water.
- Place a leafy shoot (without roots) in the test tube.
- Pour a few drops of oil in the test tube. The layer of oil on water surface prevents the loss of water by evaporation.
- Place the test tube in a beaker and weigh them together.
- Take out the test tube from the beaker and place it straight in the test tube stand fir a few hours.
- Weigh the test tube again by keeping it in the beaker.
Observation :
The difference in weight will indicate the loss of water by the shoot. As there are no roots to absorb water, the rate of transpiration will be less in such case.
