ACTIVITY TO SHOW THE LOSS IN WEIGHT OF A POTTED PLANT AS A RESULT OF TRANSPIRATION.

Take a twig of plant and place it in a beaker filled with water and thereafter pour a layer of oil over the surface of water to avoid the loss of water by evaporation. Weigh it.

Then place it in the sunlight for a period of time.

You will notice some loss of water in it. Now measure its weight you will find that its weight has decreased, this is due to the loss of water in the form of transpiration which was absorbed by the plant.

Aim :

To show the loss in weight of a potted plant as a result of transpiration.

Materials Required :

A potted plant, weighing machine, polythene bag.

Procedure :

  1. Take a small potted plant.
  2. Weigh the plant with the help of a weighing machine.
  3. Note down the initial weight of the entire plant
  4. Cover the entire pot with polythene bag and tie the mouth of the bag tightly around the base of the stem. This is done to prevent evaporation of water from the soil.
  5. Keep it under the sunlight.
  6. After some time, measure the weight of the plant again.
  7. Notte down the final weight of the plant.

Observation :

Compare the initial and final readings of the weight. This will give you the loss in weight of the plant due to transpiration.
