Aim:

To verify the laws of reflection of sound

Materials Required:

2 pipes.of equal length, Tuning fork and a hard pad, Reflecting surface like a mirror, Protractor and a pencil

Theory:

Laws of Reflection of sound

Sound follows the same laws of reflection as light

1. the incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal lie on the same plane

2. Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection

Procedure:

1. Place a mirror on a table and draw a normal (perpendicular) on the mirror.

2. Place the two pipes on either side of the normal with a distance of at least 5 cm from the mirror.

3. Strike the tuning fork on the rubber pad and place it near one pipe.

4. Change the positions of the pipe and repeat the third step until you can hear the the sound of the tuning fork the loudest.

5. Draw a straight line from the pipe to normal.

6. You will notice that both of the lines are forming an equal angle with the normal

7. Now, strike the tuning fork with the rubber pad and place it near one of the pipes and slightly lift the other pipe and try to listen to the ringing sound. You will observe that the sound would've been fainter.

Observation:

Since the sound was best heard when both the pipes had the same angle from the normal

The laws of reflection of sound are verified.

Hope this helps
