Answer: The poem “Adam” was written by Hugh Walter Gilbert Cook, in the year 2003.

Explanation:

Formalistic approach:

  • The poem is a distinct work free from political, social, and other external perspectives in a formalistic approach.
  • The title of the poem shows that only one character is given priority. The poem is about one character.
  • In biblical scripture,  Adam was referred to a  the first man that God made, but in the poem, the character is not described as the first man but instead as someone who wants more and finds something is lacking.
  • The imagery—sense of touch—was used in the stanza 8 to 10 “He’s aware of an itch; And scratching; Has yet to be invented”. It refers that he is aware that something is missing and that he needs to find it to satisfy his curiosity but the “scratching” that can provide the satisfaction to his curiosity hasn’t been invented.

Feminist approach:

  • If the poem is viewed from a feminist point of a view, the author, Hugh Cook refers to Eva as “Something on two legs/ Is running after him”.
  • She is not described as a human being but as some object with two legs. She is not considered as someone as important.
  • The man is shown as someone who makes all the decisions whereas the woman, Eva is someone who follows him.
  • In the later stanzas the men are portrayed as someone who is superior to women.
  • Throughout the poem only Adam's thoughts and feelings are described.
