To add : -5 and 7

Solution :

  • Addition is the arithmetic operation of adding two numbers.
  • Addition  rules for integers:
  1. If two negative integers are to be added then addition operation is performed and sum obtained has negative sign .(-) + (-) = -
  2. If one negative and one positive integers are to be added then operation performed is subtraction and difference obtained has sign of greater integer. i.e.  (-) + (+)= sign \ of \ greater\ integer
  3. If both positive integers are to be added then operation performed is addition and sum obtained has positive sign  i.e. (+)+(+)=+
  • Therefore according to rule 2  we add ( -5 and 7 ) .
  • (-5 )+ (7 ) = 2

Hence, 2 is the sum of  ( -5 and 7 ) .
