When mixed, calcium oxide and water react together highly exothermically to form calcium hydroxide:

CaO(s)+H2O(l)→Ca(OH)2(s)CaO(s)+H2O(l)→Ca(OH)2(s) ΔH<<0ΔH<<0

If water is dripped slowly onto a lump of calcium oxide, a hissing is heard as excess water is turned to steam by the heat produced in the reaction.
