Concept:

We first recall the concept of probability to proceed with this question

The term Probability refers to the chances of occurence and non- occurence  of events.

Given:

Addition rule of probability is

P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)

Solution:

If A an B be two events,

Then the General Addition Rule of Probability is given by:

P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B)

for the addition rule to be of the form    P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)

P(A\cap B)=0 (i.e. probability of the intersection of two events must be zero)

i.e.The events A and B must be Mutually exclusive .

Hence, the given addition rule is for mutually exclusive events
