ading Question 2: (10 marks)
Read the text below and answer the questions that follow:. / 10 What is a black hole? The term "black hole" was coined in 1967 by American astronomer John Wheeler. It is a great amount of matter packed into a very small area - think of a star ten times more massive than the Sun squeezed into a sphere approximately the diameter of New York City. The result is a gravitational field so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. In recent years, spacecraft instruments have painted a new picture of these strange objects that are, to many, the most fascinating objects in space. Most black holes form from the remnants of a large star that dies in a supernova explosion. There are four types of black holes: stellar, intermediate, supermassive, and miniature. The most common type of medium-sized black holes is called "stellar." The mass of a stellar black hole can be up to 20 times greater than the mass of the sun and can fit inside a ball with a diameter of about 10 miles. Dozens of stellar mass black holes may exist within the Milky Way galaxy. No matter their starting size, black holes can grow throughout their lives, slurping gas and dust from any objects that creep too close. Black holes have three "layers": the outer and inner event horizon, and the singularity. Astronomers estimate that the Milky Way has anywhere from 10 million to 1 billion stellar black holes, with masses roughly three times that of the sun. Scientists cannot directly observe black holes with telescopes that detect x-rays, light, or other forms of electromagnetic radiation. They can, however, infer the presence of black holes and study them by detecting their effect on other matter nearby. NASA is learning about black holes using spacecraft like the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Swift satellite, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Fermi launched in 2008 is in search of supermassive black holes and other astronomical phenomena. Spacecraft like these help scientists answer questions about the origin, evolution, and destiny of the universe. The statements below are FALSE. Correct these statements from the information given in the text: (Do not copy the sentences from the text) A black hole is empty, and light passes through it easily.
