'Adivasi' are people belonging to the scheduled tribes(ST) in India. The term Adivasi means 'original inhabitants' of the land. But the government has termed scheduled, so that they can benefit certain privileges. There are around 67.7 million adivasis in India.
Discrimination
The Adivasis have been discriminated for long periods in History. Reference can be seen in epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, that talk about tribes in forest, people who were kept away from society.
The adivasis were not included in the Hindu community and were considered as untouchables.
Conflict.
Since ancient times these people have been fighting for their rights.
The land acquisition act of 1894 allowed government to seize, any unrecognized land for public purpose. This resulted in clearance of forests, which was their main home and resulted in their displacement.
They were not given the benefit of education, social status, finance and even the basic needs like water and food.
Resistance
But in current days, this situation is gradually changing . By the combined effort of Government and voluntary organisations, many adivasis, have obtained education, employment and social status.
