Administration of the British become easy during the reigh of Lord Wellesley as Wellesley relied on three methods i.e.
- The system of Subsidiary Alliances;
- Outright wars; and
- Assumptions of the territories of previously subordinated rulers.
* From 1757 to 1857, the East India Company used a variety of political, economic and diplomatic methods to annex Indian kingdoms. The subsidiary alliance was one such method. According to the terms of this alliance, Indian rulers were not allowed to have their independent armed forces. They were to be protected by the Company, and had to pay for the “subsidiary forces” that the Company had to maintain for the purpose of protecting them. If Indian rulers failed to make the payment, then part of their territory was taken away as penalty.
For example, in 1801, the nawab of Awadh was forced to give over half of his territory to the Company for failing to pay for the “subsidiary forces”.
When Lord Wellesley was appointed as the Governor General of India the British were already at war with the whole of France.
Lord Wellesley thought that it was the right time to strengthen their position in the Indian subcontinent.
Hence he came up with solutions to capture the country.
First was to make them Subsidiary alliances, second was outright war and the last method was assumption of previously subordinated rulers territory.
With these methods he was able to make the two powerful kingdoms of the country submit to him.
After the Mysore kingdom and the Maratha kingdom the control of the British over the country had risen significantly making it easier for them to administer the country.
