Thus, the number of distributed to eat classmates and the number of classmates present are in inverse proportion.
Tabulating the data given, we have:

Thus, we have, 9×x = 6×42
=> x = (6×42)/9=28
Thus, 28 students were present.
Therefore, number of student absent = 42-28 = 14 .
