Disadvantages of Vegetative propagation:

  • Vegetative propagation includes overcrowding.
  • There is no genetic variation and plants are less adaptable to environment.
  • The diseases of parent plants are transferred to offsprings.
  • No variations.
  • plants can be easily decayed.

Advantages of vegetative propagation :

  • New plants produced by vegetative propagation maintain the desirable characters of the parents.
  • Certain plants like banana, grapes, pineapple, roses, jasmine, etc., do not form seeds.
  • This method is cheap and can be easily employed to reproduce plants, especially fruit plants.

Explanation:

= The main advantage of vegetative propagation methods is that the new plants contain the genetic material of only one parent, so they are essentially clones of the parent plant.

= major disadvantage of vegetative propagation is that it prevents species genetic diversity which can lead to reductions in crop yields. The plants are genetically identical and are all, therefore, susceptible to pathogenic plant viruses, bacteria and fungi that can wipe out entire crops.
