Advantages of alternative education

Having taught in alternative education for 15 years, you'll find very few respondents with my level of experience. Advantages include: individualized instruction, alternative methods of instruction tailored to the interests of the child, and removal from a situation in which the child has been unsuccessful. Another advantage is for the students in the home school: those students who are removed are usually disruptive; thus, when those students are sent off-site, it creates a better learning environment for the general student population. It's interesting to note that in most states, alternative education is a far cheaper alternative economically than is special education.

Disadvantage: The biggest disadvantage I see is that students in alternative schools tend to form unhealthy relationships with other students in the alternative school. Notably, drug use among students has a ripple effect.
