You can change the variables and get  different answers.  If you are doing this in Excel or writing a program,  and you use variables, you can enter different numbers to get different answers.  

For example the formula for volume of a cylinder is  3.14 * radius * radius * height. If you enter this in excel as

Then you can set up a formula in Excel 3.14 * A2 * A2 * A3. You can ten replace the numbers in cells A2 and A3 to get the volume of different size cylinders. If you use just values, then you can only get the volume for 1 size cylinder.
