Explanation:

When active revegetation is needed, it is necessary to determine the species and seed sources that will establish and perform well on the site without impeding natural community recovery and succession or compromising the diversity, genetic integrity, and long-term viability of resident wild populations. (Erickson, Wood, & Riley, 2003, 18 pp.) Linhart (1995, pp. 271–287) showed that plants or their progeny must come from nearby sites to maintain the ecological and genetic integrity of the biota. Also, local populations have adaptive advantages to local conditions and are therefore less vulnerable to abrupt environmental changes (Mortlock, 2000). The use of local seed sources in revegetation also helps avoid problems of genetic contamination of native populations.
