India polity is a democratic polity and therefore India is the largest ‘functioning’ democracy in the world. ‘Functioning’ means that democratic processes and practices are actually followed and adhered to. In democracy, people have the opportunity to have a responsible and elected government.
2- Indian polity is based on parliamentary form of government, which appears to be more democratic than the Presidential system of government as in the former the executive is responsible to he Parliament and it can be removed through no-confidence motion as and when the executive becomes authoritarian. There is constitutional check and balancebetween the three organs of the government through the principles of supremacy of the constitution and rule of law.
3-Indian polity prescribes to secularism where people of all faith enjoy equal rights and the government does not discriminate citizens on the basis of religion.
4- India polity, being democratic provides forfundamental rights to people including rights to freedom, equality, religious freedom, cultural rights of minorities, constitutional remedies and so on. These rights are essential for the all round development of citizens. The right to freedom also include freedom to print and electronic media and other forms of communication. You can think of the significance of these freedoms when we compare with Chinese Polity, where citizens do not enjoy freedom of speech.
5- Indian polity is based on and consistently promoted the independence of judiciary,which is the bedrock of Indian democracy. It is potential guarantee against the authoritarian tendencies and misuse of power by the government.
6- Indian polity is a welfare polity, which subscribes to social justice to marginalized sections of society though the policy of positive discrimination and welfare measures.
7- India polity promotes the principles ofdemocratic decentralization through the Local Self-Government bodies in rural and urban areas. These institutions provide opportunity to people at grass root level for political participation and empowerment. These institutions are rightly termed as ‘Grass Root Level Democracy’ or the ‘Third Tier of Government’.
8- If we compare the similar democratic experience in other African and Asian countries, which also gained independence around India’s independence, we feel proud of the fact that we have successfully transferred political power 16 times at central level though democratic means, whereas many of the African ans Asian countries including our neighbours relapsed to various kinds of authoritarian regimes and dictatorships. During National Emergency (1975–77), Indian democracy and rule of law faced internal authoritarian threat, but soon it regained its strength and continues to move on with more vigour and confidence.
Yet there are also some fundamental disadvantages or weaknesses of Indian polity.
