ASCII uses a 7-bit encoding and ISCII uses an 8-bit which is an extension of ASCII while Unicode is a variable bit encoding that doesn't fit into one 8 bit and generally uses 16-bit encoding. Advantages and disadvantages of ISCII:
Advantages:
The advantage with ISCII is that transliteration can be achieved on the fly by simply changing the mode, as ISCII uses the same namespace.
Disadvantages:
The main drawback with ISCII is that more than one Indian scripts can not be depicted on the same screen as ISCII uses the same namespace.
With ISCII, one can have content in English and one the Indian languages, but not two or more Indian languages at a time. Tran lingual operations in two or more Indian languages is not possible using ISCII.
