Local Area Network (LAN)

A LAN is a small and privately owned network to provide local connectivity within a small region. "A region” refers to the same office, the same building, the same company and in the same schools. It provide different services like document management, sharing resources, workgroup scheduling, e-mail and fax communications services and other VOIP and unified communication. Some common LAN protocols are Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Token Ring and Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI).

Characteristics of a LAN include:

1:- Limited geographic operation up to 10 Km

2:- High speed data transfer rates

3:- Full time connectivity to local services

4:- Generally lower in cost than a WAN

5:- It uses mainly bus, ring and star topology

6:- LAN support a variety of transmission medium such as Ethernet ,fiber, wireless etc

7:- Requires little wiring, typically a single cable connecting to each device

Advantages and Disadvantages of LAN

Advantages

1:- Lower in cost

2:- Sharing of Resources

3:- High Speed

4:- Security

Disadvantages

1:- When number of nodes became increases then performance became decrease.

2:- Area covered is limited.

Wide Area Network

A WAN is used to transmit data and information over large geographical distances which may even span entire countries and continents. A WAN can contain multiple smaller networks, such as LANs or MANs. The Internet is a WAN, and connects computers all around the world together. Communication between networks is called internetworking. WAN may use advanced technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Frame Relay, and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET). WAN may be managed by multiple administration.

Advantages and Disadvantages of WAN

Advantages

1:- large geographical area

Disadvantages

1:- Complicated and complex

2:- High cost

3:- Required high performance devices

4:- low security

5:- WANs use very expensive network equipment.

Hello Mate....

LAN = Local Area Network.

Advantages Of LAN -----

  • The basic LAN implementation does not cost too much.
  • It is easy to control and manage the entire LAN as it is available in one small region.
  • The LAN configuration is very easy due to availability of required protocols in the Operating System (OS) itself
  • With the help of file servers connected on the LAN, sharing of files and folders among peers will become very easy and efficient.
  • It is easy to setup security protocols to protect the LAN users from intruders or hackers.
  • It is easy to share common resources such as printers and internet line among multiple LAN users.

Disadvantages Of LAN----

  • LAN covers small geographical area.
  • Security issues are big concern as it is easy to have access to programs and data of peers. Special security measures are needed to stop unauthorized access.
  • It is difficult to setup and maintain LAN and requires skilled technicians and network administrators.
  • In the server based LAN architecture, if server develops some fault, all the users are affected.
  • Appearance of virus in one system can spread very fast to all the LAN users very easily.

WAN = Wide Area Network

Advantages of WAN-----

  • WAN covers larger geographical area. Hence business offices situated at longer distances can easily communicate.
  • Like LAN, it allows sharing of resources and application softwares among distributed workstations or users.
  • The software files are shared among all the users. Hence all will have access to latest files. This avoids use of previous versions by them.

Disadvantages of WAN-----

  • Initial investment costs are higher.
  • It is difficult to maintain the network. It requires skilled technicians and network administrators.
  • It has lower security compare to LAN and MAN due to wider coverage and use of more technologies.

Modem =

  • A modem modulates outgoing digital signals from a computer or other digital device to analog signals for a conventional copper twisted pair telephone line and demodulates the incoming analog signal and converts it to a digital signal for the digital device.

Switch =

  • In a network, a switch is a device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to the specific output port that will take it toward its intended destination.

hope it helpz uh....

_________ Insha Allah
