advantages
1 they not only help in irrigation but also in electricity generation,water supply for domestic and industrial uses ,flood control ,recreation ,inland navigation and fish breeding .for ex the hirakund project in mahanadi basin integrates conservation of water with flood control.


DISADVANTAGES
1 regulating and damming of rivers affect their natural flow causing poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir ,.
2 it caused inter state water disputes with regard to sharing its costs and benefits
3 it also induced eartquakes,caused water borne diseases and pests and pollution resulting from ecmxcessive use of water
