Process of nitrogen fixation:

1000C
N2 + O2 ---------------> NO
NO + O2 ---------------> NO2
NO2 + H2O + O2 ----> HNO3

Advantage: This nitric acid formed falls on the earth surface and fuses with the minerals in the earth. So nitrates are formed. These nitrates are absorbed with water by the plants and when we consume food from this plant, we get NITROGEN in our body as we cannot consume nitrogen directly.

Disadvantage: This nitric acid, since falls on the earth, causes acid rain. This causes a great harm to plant life, specially if the pH value is less than 3. It causes degeneration of the monuments made by marble. Taj Mahal is an example.

Answer:

ADVANTAGES-

1. Helps plants to synthesize chlorophyll from the nitrogen compounds.

2. Helps in converting inert nitrogen gas into a usable form for the plants through the biochemical process.

3. In the process of ammonification, the bacteria help in decomposing the animal and plant matter, which indirectly helps to clean up the environment.

4. Nitrates and nitrites are released into the soil, which helps in enriching the soil with necessary nutrients required for cultivation.

5. Nitrogen is an integral component of the cell and it forms many crucial compounds and important biomolecules.

DISADVANTAGES   -

Nitrogen is an inert gas — meaning it doesn't chemically react with other gases — and it isn't toxic. But breathing pure nitrogen is deadly. That's because the gas displaces oxygen in the lungs. Unconsciousness can occur within one or two breaths, according to the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board.

Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. ... In addition, the exhaust from cars, trucks, and buses releases nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide into the air. These pollutants cause acid rain.

Too much nitrogen in the soil benefits a limited number of species that can outcompete native species, reducing biodiversity. High levels of nitrogen in groundwater are associated with intestinal cancers and miscarriages, and can be fatal to infants. Excess nitrogen compounds in waterways and lakes can cause toxic algal blooms, killing off aquatic species and threatening human health.

One form of nitrogen gas, nitrous oxide, is also a potent greenhouse gas and can contribute to global warming. High levels of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere also degrade the atmospheric ozone layer, and nitric oxide can create dangerous ground-level ozone.
