This criterion is a combination of two concepts proposed by two Mathematicians.

⇒ John Ruth was an English Mathematician. He proposed his idea in 1876.

⇒ Adolf Hurwitz was a German Mathematician. He proposed his idea in 1895.

Their ideas were given a name of Routh-Hurwitz Criterion.

Advantages:

• It is a stability criteria.
• It is a necessary condition for the stability.
• If provides stability level of Linear Time Invariant Control System.
• It provides a way to check the stability of the equations of motion of a linear system.

Disadvantage:

• The only disadvantage of this rule is its use. It has become less widely used. The reason of its lesser use was the invention of computers.
