Advantages:-

1.Since pollen grains are easily available, pollination rarely fails. It is a sure method of pollination.

2.Flowers do not have to depend on external agencies like wind, water and animals.

3.Minimum wastage of pollen. Thus, a more economical method.

4.Pure line progeny can be obtained.

5.There is no wastage of energy for decoration of flowers to attract insects.

6.There is no chance to obtain unwanted characters.

Disadvantages:-

1. Variations are not obtained.

2. Seeds after repeated self pollination are less viable and less healthy.

3. Genetic defects cannot be removed.
