Advantages and Disadvantages of Single Gender Classrooms

Schools play significant roles in the upbringing of students enrolled in these institutions. This is why students should be in a school environment that will allow them to grow emotionally, physically and mentally. However, there are two choices for parents and students to make. This is having a single-gender education or a school where students are in classrooms with a mixture of genders. In this particular discussion, we will analyze the benefits and drawbacks of being in a school with single gender classrooms.

List of Advantages of Single Gender Classrooms

1. There is less pressure on students.

In school settings where students are either all girls or all boys, competition and peer pressure will not be highlighted. That is, the playing field is leveled. There are school subjects where girls excel more than boys like language and poetry. Conversely, boys are sometimes better in engineering and mathematics than female students. By attending a school where all students are in the same gender, there will be a more relaxed atmosphere.

2. Students can concentrate more on their studies.

Another advantage of not existing with members of the opposite sex in classrooms is the prevention of distraction. In a mixed-classroom setting, it will be inevitable for girls and boys to be attracted to each other and be end up in romantic relationships at an early age.

3. Designing the classrooms will be easier.

When it comes to the body adapting to temperature, boys and girls are distinct from each other. Males are more comfortable in colder temperature while females can adapt better to warmer temperature settings. With single gender classrooms, designing the rooms can be easier and less costly. Moreover, the environment will be more conducive to learning.

List of Disadvantages Single Gender Classrooms

1. Students might find it hard to immerse in the real world.

Students spend more time in school than in their homes, perhaps from primary up to secondary levels. This means that they will get used to the school environment and interact with people they see every day, fellow students and teachers. If they are in single gender classrooms, they will be spending years with either boys or girl. This can backfire when students graduate and have to be in the real world where males and females co-exist. It might be a struggle for them to build relationships or interact with people from the opposite sex.

2. There will be lack of interaction with the opposite gender.

Although some people find it easy to be comfortable being with people in mixed genders even if they studied in exclusive schools, there are those who grow up to be uncomfortable and coy when the situation calls for them to be with the opposite sex, be it at work or recreation. Schools that are exclusive for certain genders, say, all girls or all boys, limit that chance of students to meet and communicate with people from the opposite sex and this can suppress the development of their social skills.

3. There is the possibility of stereotyping.

Another noticeable drawback of single gender classrooms is the possibility of stereotyping where females or males will be easy to judge and label people who belong to the opposite sex. This is because they do not really have constant communication or the opportunity to mingle with people from the opposite sex. However, this will not really be an issue if children are exposed to diversity in culture, race and gender while they are still young
