There are various advantage and disadvantage of the strain gauge. Some of them are given following.

In the strain gauge you will find no moving parts.
Most of the strain gauge are cheap and quite inexpensive
Strain gauge are usually small so these are easy to handle.
Disadvantages:
strain gauges biggest disadvantage is that they are non-linear.
It needs regular caliberation in order to use perfectly and take perfect reading.
